A Restorative Combination
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is produced commercially as a racemic mixture of 50% S-form and 50% R-form. Since only the R-form is bioavailable in the human body, manufacturers separate the S-form from the R-form. However, due to the instability of the racemic ALA, many of these processes produce R-ALA under conditions which result in partial polymerization of the racemic material thus affording an inferior product.

AMPAC has developed a patent-pending new technology that successfully prevents the polymerization of ALA during manufacturing, resulting in a high purity R-Alpha Lipoic Acid as a stable magnesium complex.

By using magnesium — a mineral with nutritional value in its own right — we have achieved a R-ALA complex which demonstrates stability over time and provides
the R-ALA as a free flowing powder for various formulation applications. MgRALA consists of 5% Mg: 95% R-ALA, thus maximizing the bioavailable R-form and minimizing both the salt content and polymerized ALA. Other ALA forms on the market are: R-ALA free acid (typically contains polymerized ALA due to instability); Na RALA (10% Na: 90% RALA); KRALA (16% K: 84% RALA) and RALA-Tromethamine (37% Tromethamine: 63% RALA).

R-ALA is both fat- and water-soluble and it has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier giving it more versatility in the body. R-ALA is shown to scavenge radicals in the body which makes it a powerful antioxidant. It is also one of the few antioxidants that have the ability to be regenerated in the cell. One of the most studied applications of lipoic acid is for diabetes, however this supplement has been shown in studies to treat liver and cardiovascular disease as well as various cognitive and brain functions.

Combining magnesium with pure R-ALA optimizes the nutritional benefits of
this complex. Approximately 60 percent of Americans are currently deficient in magnesium, mostly due to diets dominated by convenience foods. Typical mass market multivitamins are not sufficient enough to deliver the required optimal daily levels of a range of minerals and vitamins including magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral which plays a role in more than 300 enzyme reactions, thereby influencing nearly all major organs and systems.
